Las personas con VIH que toman correctamente su medicación pueden conseguir tener una carga viral indetectable. Si se mantiene la carga viral indetectable durante seis meses, no se puede transmitir la infección por vía sexual.
La profilaxis post-exposición (PPE) es una herramienta para prevenir la infección por VIH en las primeras 72 horas posteriores a una práctica de riesgo.
La estrategia de la PrEP ha sido aprobada en noviembre de 2019 por el Ministerio de Sanidad de España y se ha integrado en el sistema sanitario de Castilla y León en octubre de 2020.
